As a Vice President at WorkingBuildings, John McFarland plays a large role in developing and enhancing quality assurance processes. Recently he has been focused on improving the transition from construction to operations, including the transfer of information of the building and its equipment and understanding of the systems and how they operate most effectively.

John manages and provides Sustainable Consulting and Building Quality Assurance Services for a wide variety of projects including state-of-the-art data centers, healthcare facilities, central utility plants, office buildings, and other high-performance research facilities. He has overseen the delivery of over 150 LEED certified projects ranging from Certified to Platinum. John is committed to promoting rationale sustainability in all projects, whether they pursue a certification or not.

John is a pioneer of sustainability serving as LEED consultant on close to 70 projects, 55 complete, and three of which achieved Platinum certification. He has achieved several firsts with LEED certifications including; NCR Headquarters becoming the first LEED Platinum Certification Core & Shell in Georgia; the first LEED project in the State of Tennessee for Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the first LEED convention center in the Southeast for Callaway Gardens, and the first LEED-CI Silver project in Georgia in Working Buildings’ former office space. He has served on the USGBC Technical Advisory Group for Indoor Environmental Quality and was LEED Faculty for several years. John was selected to serve as the Kendeda Fund’s representative on the Living Building at Georgia Tech project. This project seeks to be the first Living Building Challenge 3.0 certified building in the Southeast.

John developed the initial concept of the commissioning software, CxAlloy in 2004 to record and communicate issues observed on a project more effectively. As an example of John’s mission to help all project team members be more successful, he provides access to the software up for use by anyone in the industry, including other commissioning firms. 

John is an Atlanta native living in Decatur with his wife and two children. He loves being outdoors, no matter the season whether that is digging in his yard, running or backpacking…and if he is not doing that, he’ll likely be at an Atlanta United match!
