As master planner and developer for the project, the team partnered with Bank of America to revitalize the historic Third Ward, which had deteriorated over the years as residents migrated to newer areas of the city. John Goff led the team, working hand-in-hand with eight architectural firms and four general contractors to develop 1.2 million square feet of high-tech office space, and 125,000 square feet of retail. Under and extremely compressed schedule, the technology center was delivered on time and significantly under budget, and has since been recognized as a catalyst for new growth in Uptown Charlotte.

The first block of the Gateway Village project was set aside for parking, residential and retail uses. The challenge was to build a 1,800 care pre-cast parking deck of 8 stories, completely surrounded by 250 residential units (executed by 3 other developers) and provide a walkable environment for the tenants of the office blocks. The eastern edge was bound by Norfolk Southern Rail tracks had the most prominent view of the whole Gateway Development from Uptown Charlotte. The development team hired an artist to create an innovative wind screen to cover the full eastern side to shield an unsightly view while providing the amenity of art.
